Why are mind breaks important?

Although mental breaks promote relaxation and tranquility, they also have benefits with our thinking skills, feelings, and school performance. Today, it is easier than ever to take your work on the go, access documents remotely, and talk to supervisors or teachers via video chat. However, it also means many of us are working more often or at times we typically would not. Therefore, like any other organ in the body, our brains need time to rest, recover, and recharge.

In addition to its benefits, taking a few minutes away from our desks can prevent burnout and mental fatigue. For those starting a new job or school year, taking a five-to-ten-minute break to watch a video or read a book will increase productivity, as your cognitive resources can replenish for the task ahead. Breaks help restore the ability to concentrate and may promote productivity; returning to work after a small gap will have you approaching tasks with a new perspective and renewed energy. Additionally, when it comes to learning further information or skills, the spacing effect, or spaced breaks between study sessions, has been shown to improve memory retention. Therefore, a mental break during a long day should not be considered “slacking off” but rather something crucial to promote productivity, concentration, and learning.

Outside of cognitive effects, breaks can stimulate new insights and promote creativity. They are emotionally beneficial, promoting one’s overall well-being and social interaction, which may facilitate support and connection during a long work week or school day. Short, frequent mental breaks can look different for everyone. It can take some trial and error to find what works best for you, so don’t be discouraged!
